A bioethanol fireplace costs roughly £1 to £2 per hour to run at current UK fuel prices. That is the short answer.

The longer one matters, because how you buy your fuel changes that figure by more than half, and because the comparison people usually reach for — against electric heating — turns out to be measuring the wrong thing.

The calculation

Two numbers decide everything: how much fuel your fireplace burns, and what you pay for it.

Consumption sits between 0.3 and 0.6 litres per hour, depending on how far the burner is opened.

Fuel price in the UK generally falls between £2 and £4 per litre. Five-litre containers work out around £2.50 to £3 per litre, while buying by the single bottle can reach £5 or more.

Multiply the two and you get between roughly 75p and £2.10 an hour. In practice, most people running a normal flame on sensibly bought fuel land close to £1.50 an hour.

What a single fill actually costs

Burn time depends on the model, and this is where the range divides.

  • Tabletop models — 45 minutes to an hour per fill: roughly £1 to £1.50. The cost of a dinner accompanied by a real flame.
  • The floor-standing ORA 80 — around three hours per fill: roughly £3 to £5. A full evening.

Over a winter, lighting a tabletop model twice a week costs somewhere around £100 to £150. The ORA 80, used the same way, sits closer to £300.

Put another way: an evening by the fire costs about the same as two coffees.

What about electric heating?

A bioethanol fireplace produces two to three kilowatts of heat. A 2 kW electric heater produces a comparable amount, and at the current Ofgem price cap of 26.11p per kilowatt-hour it costs roughly 52p an hour to run.

So measured in pence per kilowatt-hour, electric is cheaper. We would rather say that plainly than bury it in a footnote.

But it is worth noticing what that comparison measures, and what it quietly leaves out. Nobody has ever pulled a chair closer to a fan heater. Nobody has turned the lights down to see one better, or stayed up an extra hour because of one. An electric heater raises the temperature of a room. That is the whole of what it does.

A real flame does something no thermostat can. It moves. It changes the light in the room. It draws people towards it and keeps them there, and the evening slows down around it. That is not an argument about heating efficiency — it is the reason fireplaces existed for several thousand years before anyone thought to measure a kilowatt.

The difference comes to about a pound an hour. Across an evening, that is the price of a coffee — and nobody has ever asked whether a coffee is a cost-effective way to consume caffeine.

The honest way to put it: the warmth is real and it is welcome, but the fire is what you are paying for. If that is what you want, this is what it costs, and it is not much.

Where the fuel price really moves

The single biggest variable is not your fireplace, it is how you buy your fuel.

  • Single bottles from a shop: the most expensive route by a wide margin, sometimes £5 or more per litre.
  • Five-litre containers: the sensible default for most households, around £2.50 to £3 per litre.
  • Bulk (25 litres and up): the cheapest, dropping towards £2 to £2.50 per litre.

Buying 25 litres at the start of the season rather than a bottle at a time can cut your running cost by close to half — which brings a winter of Friday evenings down to the price of a couple of takeaways. Bioethanol keeps well in a sealed container, stored away from heat and sunlight.

One caution: do not chase the lowest price into the wrong product. Aim for 96 to 97 per cent purity, sold expressly for fireplaces. Below that band, combustion turns incomplete — less heat, more smell, and residue building up in the burner.

Four ways to stretch a fill

  • Close the burner partially. A smaller flame lasts noticeably longer for the same fuel — and on a quiet evening it is often the nicer one.
  • Fill only what you will use. Fuel left in the burner evaporates slowly between uses.
  • Buy in bulk at the start of the season.
  • Snuff it rather than let it burn out. The snuffer preserves what is left for next time.

The purchase cost, for context

A design bioethanol fireplace costs between £100 and £200. There is no installation, no chimney work, no flue, no annual sweeping and no servicing.

That is where it pulls decisively ahead of a wood burner. Installing a log burner in the UK runs to around £2,300 on average, and between £4,600 and £7,300 in a home with no existing chimney, once you add a twin-wall flue, hearth and HETAS certification. All of that before the first log.
