Yes — bioethanol fireplaces are safe to use, provided you follow a small number of rules. But that answer deserves more than a single word, because a bioethanol fireplace is not a candle. It holds liquid fuel and burns with an open flame, and almost every accident involving one comes down to the same handful of mistakes.

This guide covers what actually burns, what ventilation you need, which fuel to buy, and the three rules that matter most — including the one responsible for the majority of incidents.

What actually burns in a bioethanol fireplace

Bioethanol is an alcohol produced from plant material such as corn, wheat or sugar beet. When it burns completely, it produces carbon dioxide and water vapour. Nothing else: no smoke, no soot, no ash, no sparks.

That is why a bioethanol fireplace needs no chimney and no flue, and why one can sit in a flat where a wood fire would be impossible. It also explains the single fact behind every safety rule below: the flame draws its oxygen from the room it is in.

Do bioethanol fireplaces need ventilation?

Yes, but less than most people expect. A normally ventilated room is enough — an ordinary living room with a door and a window, going about its usual air exchange. The flame consumes oxygen at a modest rate.

What to avoid is a sealed or very small enclosed space, and running the fireplace while you sleep. Not because of fumes, but because an unattended open flame is an unattended open flame.

The three rules that prevent almost every accident

1. Never refuel a lit or hot burner

This is the important one. If you pour fuel onto a burner that is still hot, the liquid vaporises on contact, and that vapour can ignite — producing a flare-up that travels back towards the bottle in your hand.

Always extinguish the flame first, then wait until the burner is completely cool. Fifteen minutes is a minimum, longer if it has been burning for hours. If you are unsure, touch the metal: if it is warm, wait.

2. Never use water to extinguish it

Ethanol is lighter than water and floats on top of it. Throwing water onto a burning bioethanol fireplace spreads the burning fuel rather than putting it out.

Use the snuffer tool supplied with the fireplace — a metal plate that slides over the burner and starves the flame of oxygen. Keep it within reach whenever the fireplace is lit.

3. Keep one metre clear

Curtains, throws, cushions, books, dried flowers, low shelves. Maintain at least one metre in every direction, including above the flame. Heat rises, and the space over a fireplace is the one people forget.

Which bioethanol fuel is safe to use?

Only fuel sold specifically for bioethanol fireplaces. The practical target is 96 to 97 per cent purity, and that band is narrower than it looks.

At 96–97%, combustion completes cleanly: no soot, no chemical odour while burning, and a stable flame. The small remaining water content is doing useful work, slowing evaporation and steadying the burn. Push above 97% and the fuel evaporates faster and burns more aggressively; drop below 96% and combustion turns incomplete, giving less heat and more smell.

Never use methylated spirits, surgical spirit, petrol, lighter fluid, gel fuel, or any alcohol not sold expressly for fireplaces. They burn at different temperatures and several release fumes you do not want in a living room.

Expect to use 0.3 to 0.6 litres per hour depending on flame size, which gives roughly three to five hours from a full burner. Do bioethanol fireplaces produce carbon monoxide?

Complete combustion of ethanol produces carbon dioxide and water vapour, not carbon monoxide. But no combustion is ever perfect. Incomplete combustion — caused by inadequate ventilation or by a dirty or corroded burner — can produce small quantities of carbon monoxide.

In practice this means: ventilate the room normally, keep the burner clean, replace it if you see corrosion, and never run the fireplace in a closed room. If you use one regularly, a carbon monoxide alarm is inexpensive and a reasonable precaution — as it is with any fuel-burning appliance.

Are they safe around children and pets?

A bioethanol fireplace produces no smoke or soot, so there is nothing in the air to harm them. But it is not safe unattended around small children or animals: the flame is real, and the glass gets hot.

Placement does most of the work. Put the fireplace on a stable surface where it cannot be knocked over, and out of reach. A tabletop model on a low table a toddler can reach is the wrong choice for that home — a floor-standing model with weight and a wide base is the safer one.

How the risk compares to a wood fire

Against a wood fire, bioethanol removes a great deal: no sparks, no flying embers, no soot on the walls, no chimney to sweep, no chimney fire, no ash to carry out.

It adds one thing wood does not have — you handle liquid fuel. That single difference is the whole story, and it is why the refuelling rule matters more than everything else combined.

Neither is dangerous when used properly. They are simply dangerous in different ways.

Your checklist before lighting

  • The fireplace sits on a stable, level surface
  • At least one metre of clear space in every direction, including above
  • The burner is cool, and the fuel is bioethanol made for fireplaces at 96–97%
  • The burner is filled to the marked level, never overfilled
  • Any spilled fuel has been wiped up before lighting
  • The snuffer tool is within reach
  • The room is normally ventilated
  • You will be in the room while it burns

In short

A bioethanol fireplace is safe in the way a gas hob is safe: entirely, as long as you respect what it is. Cool before refuelling, snuffer instead of water, one metre of clear space. Those three habits cover almost everything.
