Tabletop or Freestanding: Which Bioethanol Fireplace to Choose

Bioethanol fireplaces come in two families, and the choice between them decides more about your experience than the design does. Get it right and the fireplace lives where you want it. Get it wrong and it ends up in a cupboard.

The distinction is simple: freestanding models sit on the floor, tabletop models sit on furniture. Everything else follows from that.

The short version

• Freestanding if you want warmth as much as atmosphere, have a room to give it, or have small children or animals.
• Tabletop if you want the fire close to people, need to move it between rooms or outdoors, or have limited floor space.

If both sound right, read on — four questions settle it.

Question 1: warmth, or atmosphere?

Burner size drives heat output, and burner size follows the size of the fireplace. A floor-standing model carries a larger burner, gives a bigger flame and burns longer between fills.

Our ORA 80 stands 80 cm tall and burns up to four hours — the largest flame in the range. A tabletop model like the LUME 47 runs two to three hours and gives real warmth to the people near it rather than to the whole room.

There is also a placement effect people underestimate. Heat rises. A fireplace at seated height warms the seating area far more effectively than one at ankle level — which is why a floor-standing model of a decent height often beats a tabletop one sitting low.

Question 2: who else is in the house?

This one overrules the others.

A tabletop fireplace sits at exactly the height a small child can reach, on furniture that can be knocked. A floor-standing model with weight and a wide base cannot easily be tipped, and its flame sits higher than a toddler's reach.

With young children or an energetic dog in the house, choose freestanding — and still never leave it burning unattended. The safety guide covers the rest.

Question 3: will it stay in one place?

Here the tabletop family wins clearly.

A tabletop fireplace moves with the evening: dining table for a meal, coffee table afterwards, sheltered terrace in September. If you want a fire that follows you rather than furnishing one room, this is the family to pick.

The TABLE is made for exactly this — 32 cm wide, low enough to see across at dinner, at home indoors or on a covered terrace. The APEX takes the same idea outdoors with tempered glass that keeps the flame steady in moving air.

A floor-standing model is portable in theory, but in practice it finds its corner and stays there.

Question 4: how much space do you actually have?

A freestanding fireplace needs floor space and, more importantly, one metre of clearance in every direction, including above. In a small living room that is a real constraint — measure before you buy.

A tabletop model needs the same clearance but takes it from surfaces you already have. On a console or sideboard it occupies space that was decorative anyway.

Choosing within the tabletop family

Once you have settled on tabletop, the difference is shape and where it will sit.

• LUME 47 — round glass panels on a curved base, 48 cm wide. The most sculptural of the four, made for a console or sideboard where it will be looked at.
• TABLE — 32 cm and low. Made for a dining table, where you need to see the person opposite.
• CUBE — a rectangular glass tower, 35 cm tall. The most restrained, for a shelf or low furniture in a minimal interior.
• APEX — triangular, in tinted tempered glass. The most architectural, and the one built for covered outdoor use.
• CYLINDER 40 — a slim glass column, 41 cm tall, with the flame visible from every side. Suits a sideboard where it will be seen from all angles.

A note on what does not vary

Both families burn the same fuel at the same rate per hour, produce no smoke or soot, need no chimney and no installation, and follow the same three safety rules. Neither is safer or cleaner than the other in principle — the difference is placement, scale and how you will live with it.
