These two are the realistic options for anyone who wants a fireplace in a home with no chimney. They are often presented as near-equivalents. They are not — and the difference between them is simpler than most comparisons make it.
An electric fireplace simulates a flame. A bioethanol fireplace has one. Everything below follows from that.
What electric does well
Worth stating plainly, because on several counts electric is the easier appliance to own.
It is cheaper per hour: at the current Ofgem price cap of 26.11p per kilowatt-hour, a 2 kW electric fireplace costs around 52p an hour, against roughly £1 to £2 for bioethanol.
There is no fuel to buy or store — you press a switch. It can be left running unattended. Many models separate flame from heat, so you can have the visual effect in July. And with no open flame, it carries no fire risk at all.
If what you want is warmth at the lowest running cost with the least involvement, that is a reasonable set of advantages.
What it cannot do
An electric fireplace produces an image of a flame using LEDs, sometimes with a water-vapour mist to add depth. The good ones are convincing from across the room. None of them survive being looked at closely.
A real flame moves unpredictably. It changes the light on the walls as it burns. It throws radiant warmth you feel on your skin, rather than air pushed by a fan. And it holds attention in a way a repeating animation never does — which is precisely why people sit near fires and not near radiators.
That difference is not measurable, which is why comparison tables skip it. It is also the only reason anyone buys a fireplace instead of a heater.
Two more differences worth knowing
No socket, no cable. A bioethanol fireplace works on a terrace, in a power cut, in the middle of a room, on a dining table. An electric one works within reach of a plug, with a cable running to it.
Burn time is finite. Our tabletop models give 45 minutes to an hour per fill; the floor-standing ORA 80 gives around three hours. An electric fireplace runs indefinitely. The question that actually decides it
Ask yourself what you pictured when you decided you wanted a fireplace.
If you pictured a warm room, you are shopping for a heater, and there are efficient ways to heat a room.
If you pictured the fire itself — people drawn towards it, the light moving on the walls, an evening that slows down — then that is a specific thing, and only one of these two produces it. An electric fireplace will look like the idea from a distance and stop working the moment you look at it properly.
The extra pound an hour is not buying heat. It is the difference between a picture of a fire and a fire.
A note on running costs

Choosing yours
For a living room where warmth matters as much as atmosphere, the ORA 80 gives the largest flame in our range at seated height, and around three hours per fill. For a table, a console or a terrace, the LUME 47 and the TABLE put the fire closer to people.
