Search this question and you will mostly find fireplace sellers telling you their product is clean, green and carbon-neutral. We sell bioethanol fireplaces, so treat what follows accordingly — but we would rather give you the real picture than a slogan.

The short version: on air quality the case is genuinely strong. On carbon, the honest claim is smaller than the one usually made.

No particulate emissions — the strongest argument

This one is not marketing. Burning wood releases fine particulate matter, PM2.5, which is a well-documented air quality problem both indoors and out. It is why the UK now requires all new stoves to meet Ecodesign emission standards, why Smoke Control Areas exist, and why wet wood and house coal have been banned in most domestic settings.

Complete ethanol combustion produces carbon dioxide and water vapour. No soot, no tar, no fine particulates. On the pollutant that actually harms lungs, bioethanol is in a different category from wood entirely — and that is the comparison most people are actually making, because wood is the alternative they were considering.

A renewable fuel

Bioethanol is fermented from plants — corn, wheat, sugar beet, sugar cane — which regrow on an annual cycle. It is not drawn from a finite reserve, unlike gas or oil, and it does not depend on felling anything.

No installation, no building work

Easily overlooked. A wood burner installation means a flue, a hearth, often structural work, and the materials, transport and labour that come with it. A bioethanol fireplace is a manufactured object that arrives in a box. The embodied footprint of the installation is zero, because there is no installation.

Heat that stays in the room

With no flue, essentially all the heat produced goes into the room. An open wood fire sends the majority of its energy straight up the chimney. Per unit of fuel burnt, more of the output does useful work.

Where the usual claim goes too far

You will often read that bioethanol is carbon neutral: the plants absorbed CO2 as they grew, so burning them releases only what was already captured.

That is true in outline, and incomplete in practice. It leaves out the energy used to grow, harvest, ferment, distil, bottle and transport the fuel — distillation in particular takes energy. Depending on the feedstock and the distillery's energy source, real-world bioethanol comes out lower carbon than fossil fuels rather than carbon-free.

We prefer the accurate phrasing: renewable, no particulates, and lower carbon than gas or oil. That is a good position, and it does not need inflating.

Two practical points

The flame draws oxygen from the room, at a rate comparable to several candles, and releases close to a litre of water vapour per litre of fuel burnt. In a normally ventilated room, neither is noticeable. In a small, closed, already-damp room, running one for hours daily is not ideal — our safety guide covers ventilation properly.

How it compares

Against a wood burner: far better on air quality, no felling, no chimney to build, no ash. This is the comparison that matters for most people, and bioethanol wins it clearly. The full comparison is here.

Against gas: a renewable feedstock where gas is fossil, and no permanent connection to install.

Against an electric fireplace: electric involves no combustion, so on emissions alone it is lower — but it also produces no flame, only an LED image of one. Different products for different intentions. We compare them here.

How to reduce your own impact

  • Buy fuel in bulk. Twenty-five litres in one delivery beats twenty-five single bottles — less packaging, one journey instead of many.
  • Choose 96–97% purity. Cleaner combustion means less unburnt fuel, so you get more from each litre.
  • Run a smaller flame. Partially closing the burner stretches the same fill considerably.
  • Snuff it rather than let it burn out. The snuffer preserves what is left.
  • Buy one good fireplace. Matte steel and tempered glass outlast the cheap end of the market by years, and the greenest object is the one you never replace.

Our conclusion

If you want a real flame indoors, a bioethanol fireplace is the cleanest way to have one. No particulates, no felling, no chimney, a renewable fuel, and nothing built into your home.

It is not a zero-impact object — nothing that burns is — and we would rather say so than claim otherwise. But on the choice most people are actually weighing, it is the better one by a clear margin.
