A bioethanol fireplace is a fireplace that burns liquid alcohol instead of wood or gas. It produces a real, open flame — and needs no chimney, no flue, no gas line and no electricity.

That last sentence is the whole reason the category exists, and it follows from one fact of chemistry. This guide explains that fact, what it makes possible, and what it does not.

What is bioethanol?

Bioethanol is ethyl alcohol produced by fermenting plant material — typically corn, wheat, sugar beet or sugar cane. Chemically it is the same alcohol found in any spirit, distilled to a much higher concentration and denatured so it cannot be drunk.

For fireplace use, the working purity is 96 to 97 per cent. That band matters more than most people expect, and we cover why in our guide to choosing bioethanol fuel.

The reaction that removes the chimney

When ethanol burns with enough oxygen, it converts almost entirely into carbon dioxide and water vapour. Both are gases already present in the air you are breathing.

Compare that with wood. Wood is a complex solid that never burns completely: it leaves particulates, tar, soot and ash, and those have to go somewhere. That somewhere is a chimney.

Bioethanol leaves nothing solid behind. There is no smoke to extract, no soot to deposit, no ash to remove. With nothing to vent, the flue becomes unnecessary — and with it the building work, the sweeping, the permissions and the four-figure installation.

How the appliance is built

The mechanism is deliberately simple, which is why there is so little to go wrong.

  • The burner — a sealed metal reservoir, usually stainless steel, holding the liquid fuel. Fuel does not burn as liquid; it evaporates at the surface and the vapour is what ignites.
  • The slider — a metal plate that opens and closes the burner opening. Opening it wider gives a bigger flame and more heat; closing it partially gives a smaller flame and a longer burn. It also serves as the snuffer.
  • The glass — tempered panels that shield the flame from draughts and keep it visible from every side.
  • The body — the structural base, in our case matte black steel, weighted for stability.

What it delivers

Real heat. Between two and three kilowatts, comparable to a plug-in electric heater, enough to noticeably warm a room of up to 30 m². And with no flue carrying heat away, practically all of it stays in the room — unlike an open wood fire, which loses most of its output up the chimney. A defined burn. Tabletop models give 45 minutes to an hour per fill — the length of a dinner or an aperitif. The floor-standing ORA 80 holds a larger burner and gives around three hours, enough for a whole evening. Consumption runs 0.3 to 0.6 litres an hour depending on how far the burner is opened.

Placement freedom. No chimney means no fixed position. It works in a flat, a rental, a room with no hearth, or a sheltered terrace — and it moves when you do.

What it is not

It is not a heating system. It warms one room, while it is burning, and it cannot be left unattended or run overnight.

How it compares
