If you want a real fire in a British home, you have two realistic options: a wood burning stove or a bioethanol fireplace. They look like alternatives. They are not really competing for the same job — and the gap between them is far wider than most comparisons admit.

Start with the number that decides it

Installing a wood burning stove in the UK costs around £2,300 on average. If your home has no existing chimney, a complete installation — twin-wall flue, Ecodesign stove, hearth, register plate, carbon monoxide alarm and HETAS certification — runs to between £4,600 and £7,300.

A design bioethanol fireplace costs £100 to £200, arrives in a box, and is lit three minutes later.

That is not a small difference in price. It is the difference between a building project and a purchase.

What a wood burner asks of you

Beyond the money, a stove brings obligations that are easy to underestimate until you own one.

It is notifiable building work. Installation falls under Part J of the Building Regulations. The straightforward route is a HETAS-registered installer who can self-certify and notify Building Control for you.

The rules have tightened. Since January 2022, every new stove sold in the UK must meet Ecodesign standards — at least 75% efficient, with strictly limited particulate emissions. If you live in a Smoke Control Area, your stove must be DEFRA-exempt or Ecodesign-compliant, and wet wood and traditional house coal are now banned in most domestic settings.

It needs feeding and maintaining. Seasoned logs to buy and store dry, ash to remove, glass to clean, and a chimney to sweep annually.

It is permanent. If you rent, it is almost certainly not an option. If you move, it stays.

What a wood burner gives back

All of that buys something real, and it would be dishonest to pretend otherwise.

A 5 kW stove produces roughly twice the heat of a bioethanol fireplace, burns for as long as you keep feeding it, and can genuinely heat a large room through a whole winter. Logs are cheaper per kilowatt-hour than bioethanol, markedly so if you have access to your own wood. Over ten years in a house you own, a stove can pay back its installation.

And there is the fire itself: the crackle, the smell of woodsmoke, the ritual of building it.

What a bioethanol fireplace gives instead

The case for bioethanol is not that it beats a stove at being a stove. It is that it removes every barrier between you and a real flame tonight.

  • No chimney, no flue, no installer. Combustion produces only carbon dioxide and water vapour, so there is nothing to vent — see how it works.
  • No planning, no certification, no Smoke Control restrictions. Nothing to notify, nothing to inspect.
  • It works in a flat and in a rental. Nothing fixed to the building, and it leaves with you — see the guide for flats.

  • No ash, no soot, no sweeping. Nothing settles on the walls and nothing needs carrying out.

On heat, be realistic: two to three kilowatts against a stove's five or more. But with no flue to lose it up, practically all of that heat stays in the room — whereas an open hearth sends most of its output straight up the chimney.

On duration, a stove burns as long as you feed it. A bioethanol fireplace burns for a defined session: 45 minutes to an hour on a tabletop model, around three hours on the floor-standing ORA 80. An evening, or a moment — chosen deliberately rather than tended all night.

Running costs, side by side

Bioethanol costs roughly £1 to £2 an hour. Logs are cheaper per hour of heat.

But the comparison only works if you include the entry price. A stove starts £2,300 to £7,300 in debt before it saves you a penny. At £1.50 an hour, a bioethanol fireplace would have to burn for well over a thousand evenings to reach the installation cost alone of a log burner in a home without a chimney.

Which one is actually for you

A wood burner suits a house you own, with a chimney or the means to add one, where you want a primary heat source, have somewhere dry to store logs, and a four-figure installation is within reach.

A bioethanol fireplace suits a flat or a rental, a home with no chimney, someone who wants the fire more than the heating system, who would rather not deal with ash and sweeping, or who wants it working this week rather than next season.

Most people who arrive at bioethanol are not settling for less. They wanted a fire, priced a stove, and found that the building work — not the fire — was the real cost.
